The machining center is often divided into vertical machining center and horizontal machining center according to the state of the spindle in the space, the spindle of the machining center is called the vertical machining center in the vertical state in the space, and the spindle is called the horizontal machining center in the space. If the spindle can be converted vertically and horizontally, it is called a vertical and horizontal machining center or a five-sided machining center, also known as a composite machining center. According to the number of machining center columns, there are single column type and double column type (gantry type).

According to the number of motion coordinates of the machining center and the number of coordinates controlled at the same time: there are three axes two linkage, three axes three linkage, four axes three linkage, five axes four linkage, six axes five linkage, etc. Three-axis and four-axis refer to the number of motion coordinates that the machining center has, and linkage refers to the number of coordinates that the control system can control at the same time, so as to realize the position and speed control of the tool relative to the workpiece.
According to the number and function of the worktable, there are single table machining centers, double table machining centers, and multi-table machining centers.

According to the processing accuracy: there are ordinary machining centers and high-precision machining center. Ordinary machining center, the resolution is 1μm, the maximum feed speed is 15~25m/min, and the positioning accuracy is about l0μm. The high-precision machining center has a resolution of 0.1μm, a maximum feed speed of 15~100m/min, and a positioning accuracy of about 2μm. Between 2~l0μm, more ±5μm, can be called precision level.
